Heath took a bite of jerky and chewed, gnashing over the problem in his mind as vigorously as he ground the dried meat between his teeth. The temperature was nice and cool and the scenery was breathtaking. It would have been an awesome day if not for the major attitude coming from Jessie.

When Bridger gave the order to move out, he fell into step beside her.

“Okay, what’s going on?”

Her mouth tightened. “What do you mean?”

“You got all weird yesterday and now you’re avoiding me. Why?”

“Nothing. I think we need to focus on the treasure hunt, not personal stuff.”

“Can’t we do both?” When she didn’t reply, he glanced around to make sure they were out of the hearing range of the rest of the group. He needn’t have worried. Bridger and Radley were well out ahead and Texas meandered behind them, seemingly lost in his own little world. Sophia and Deacon brought up the rear, their arms looped around each other waists and holding each other so tightly it was a miracle they could even walk. It gave Heath a savage dart of humor to know Leo was out there somewhere, probably seeing them glued to each other through his binoculars and unable to do anything about it. He was nothing if not protective of his little sister.

“I thought we had something here,” he said to Jessie. “Or at least the start of something.”

She kept her eyes on the trail and wouldn’t look at him. “Heath—”

“Wait,” he interrupted. “The way you just said my name tells me everything I need to know.”

And it did. The pause before, the long drawn out vowel, the tone of regret. He’d heard it before and he never wanted to hear his name said that way again.

Jessie blinked in surprise and began to say more, but Heath wasn’t having it. He felt like he’d flashed back five years, to the day he’d come home from overseas and his life had fallen apart. “Never mind,” he grated. He lengthened his stride until he’d easily moved out in front of her, well out of range if she attempted to call him back.
